Which Braid Style Is Right for Your Hair?

You’ve found the perfect braid style on Instagram or Pinterest. You love the colour. You love the length. You love how full it looks and now you want exactly the same thing.
At Beauty Splendour, our women and children’s braiding salon in Bishopbriggs, Glasgow, I regularly meet clients who arrive with an inspiration photo but are unsure whether the style is right for their hair.
But before recreating an inspiration photo, there is one important question I always consider:
Is that style actually suitable for your hair?
At Beauty Splendour, I look at much more than the finished photograph before recommending a braided style. Your hair density, natural length, scalp sensitivity, hair condition, lifestyle and the weight of the finished style all matter. Two people can show me the exact same inspiration photo and need slightly different versions of that style.
And that is completely normal. The goal is not simply to copy a picture.
The goal is to create beautiful braids that also feel comfortable and work with your hair.

Start With Your Hair, Not the Inspiration Photo
Inspiration photos are incredibly useful because they show me what you are drawn to.
But they do not show me:
how fine or dense your natural hair is;
how strong your hairline is;
whether your scalp is sensitive;
whether your hair has been bleached or chemically treated;
how much extension weight your hair can comfortably support;
or how much maintenance you actually want to do.
That is why I sometimes recommend adjusting a style rather than recreating it exactly.
That might mean changing the braid size, reducing the length, using less extension hair or choosing a slightly different installation method.
A small adjustment can sometimes make a huge difference to how comfortable and manageable your finished style feels.
Box Braids: Are They Right for You?
Box braids are one of the most versatile braided styles. You can personalise them through:
braid size;
length;
colour;
curled ends;
ombré blends;
boho curls;
and different finishes.
They can be a brilliant option if you want a style that gives you plenty of flexibility from day to day. However, bigger and longer is not automatically better.
If your natural hair is particularly fine or fragile, very long or heavy extensions may not be the most suitable choice. In that situation, I may recommend a shorter length, smaller amount of extension hair or a different braid size to keep the finished style more comfortable.

What About Knotless Braids?
Knotless braids are another popular choice and have a slightly different installation method from traditional box braids. They can create a very seamless finish and are particularly popular with clients who want a softer-looking start to their braids.
However, there is an important misconception I often see online:
Knotless does not automatically mean that any braid size, length or weight will be suitable for every person.
The amount of extension hair still matters. Your natural hair still matters. Your scalp still matters. So even with knotless braids, I will consider the overall weight and how the style will work with your natural hair.

Should You Choose Boho Braids?
Boho braids have become incredibly popular because of their soft, textured finish.
They combine braids with loose curls, creating a more relaxed look than traditional box braids. There are several ways to achieve a boho finish, including using synthetic curls or human-hair curls. Human hair usually creates a softer and more natural finish, while synthetic curls can be a more affordable option.
The right choice depends on:
the look you are trying to achieve;
your budget;
how much maintenance you are comfortable with;
and how long you would like the style to last.
Boho hair also needs more care than standard braids because the loose curls can tangle or become dry if they are not maintained properly. So if you love the look but want something very low-maintenance, it is worth discussing your options before booking.

What About Crochet Hairstyles?
“Crochet hair” does not describe just one hairstyle. There are many different crochet looks, including:
curly crochet;
Afro-textured crochet;
twists;
locs;
passion twists;
and other textured styles.
This is why I always recommend sending an inspiration photograph when enquiring about crochet. The installation method and hair required can vary depending on the finished look you want.
For some crochet appointments, you may also need to provide the extension hair yourself, so always check the service description before booking.

Can You Have Braids If Your Hair Is Fine?
This is one of the questions I hear most often. And the answer is:
Sometimes, yes.
But the better question is not simply: “Can I have braids?” It is:
“Which braid style, size, weight and length are most appropriate for my hair?”
Fine hair does not automatically mean you cannot enjoy braided styles.
It simply means I need to be more thoughtful about things such as:
extension weight;
section size;
your hairline;
the density around different areas of your scalp;
and how long you plan to keep the style in.
Sometimes the version of the hairstyle you originally saved needs to be adapted slightly. That does not mean the finished result will be any less beautiful. It means we are creating a version that makes more sense for you.
What If Your Hair Is Bleached or Fragile?
Hair that has been heavily bleached, chemically treated or damaged requires additional care. If your hair is already fragile, adding unnecessary tension or excessive extension weight may increase the risk of breakage. That does not always mean braids are completely off the table but it may mean choosing:
a lighter style;
fewer extensions;
a shorter length;
larger sections;
or giving your hair some recovery time before installing another long-term style.
If you are unsure about the condition of your hair, this is where a consultation is particularly useful.
Do Braids Have to Hurt?
No.
A common belief is that braids need to feel extremely tight in order to look neat or last longer. That is not something I encourage. Your braids should feel secure, but pain should not be treated as proof of a good installation. If your scalp is particularly sensitive, please let your stylist know.
At Beauty Splendour, I take scalp sensitivity, hairline strength and comfort into consideration when planning a style. A beautiful finish should not require unnecessary discomfort.
Your Lifestyle Matters Too
One of the most overlooked parts of choosing braids is your lifestyle.
Ask yourself:
Are you going on holiday?
Will you be swimming?
Do you exercise regularly?
Do you want something you can simply wake up and go with?
Do you need something professional for work?
Are you happy maintaining loose curls?
How long would you ideally like to keep the style?
For example, someone preparing for a hot holiday and lots of swimming may need a completely different recommendation from someone choosing braids for everyday wear at home. Your hairstyle has to fit your real life, not just look beautiful in a photograph.
What About Colour?
Colour is one of my favourite ways to personalise a braided style. You do not always need a dramatic colour change either. Sometimes mixing two or three shades can create a much softer, more flattering finish.
You could consider:
dark brown instead of black;
brown and caramel;
black-to-brown ombré;
burgundy;
auburn;
blonde highlights;
silver or grey;
or a custom colour blend.
Your natural hair colour, skin tone and the overall style can all help determine which combination will give you the finish you want.

How Do You Know What to Book?
If you already know the style you want and you have worn similar braids before, you can usually go straight to the booking page and choose your preferred service.
But if you find yourself thinking:
“I have three inspiration photos and I don’t know which one to choose.”
“My hair is really fine.”
“I have a sensitive scalp.”
“I’ve never had braids before.”
“I don’t know whether I need box braids or knotless.”
“I’m not sure what colour would suit me.”
Then a consultation may be the better starting point.
