The Complete Guide to Our Braid Training Workshops & Programs

Braid training workshop students learning at More Than Braids Academy Glasgow

If you've ever watched a YouTube tutorial on braiding, paused it seventeen times, tried to copy what you saw, and still ended up frustrated, you're not alone.

I hear the same story almost every week:

"I've tried so many times, Promise. I watch the videos, I practice on my daughter, but it never looks right. I don't know what I'm doing wrong."

And here's what I always say back:

You're not doing anything wrong. You just need someone to actually show you. That's exactly why I created More Than Braids Academy, because learning to braid shouldn't feel impossible, confusing, or frustrating. It should feel empowering, achievable, and genuinely enjoyable.

So if you've been thinking about learning to braid properly (whether for your child, yourself, or even professionally), this is your complete guide to our training workshops and programs.

Why In-Person Training Actually Works (When YouTube Doesn't)

Let me be real with you for a second.

YouTube tutorials are amazing. I love them! But here's the problem: a video can't correct your hands in real-time.

When you're learning to braid from a screen, you're missing:

  • Real-time correction: Someone noticing you're holding your sections wrong and adjusting you immediately.

  • Personalised guidance: Understanding why your hands struggle with your specific challenges.

  • The ability to ask questions: And get answers that actually make sense for your situation.

  • Hands-on practice: With someone watching and guiding you through each movement.

  • Confidence building: That comes from knowing you're doing it right, not just hoping you are.

That's the difference between watching someone braid and actually learning how to braid.

And that's what our workshops are designed to give you.

What Makes Our Training Different?

Here's what you won't find in YouTube tutorials or big group classes:

✅ Small Group Sizes

We keep our workshops intimate (max 6-8 people) so you actually get personalised attention. I can see what you're doing, correct your hands in real-time, and make sure you're really learning, not just copying.

✅ Real-Time Correction

When you're holding your sections wrong, I can physically adjust your hands. When your tension is off, I can show you exactly how to fix it. That's the difference between "kind of getting it" and truly mastering it.

✅ Safe Learning Environment

No judgement. No pressure. No "stupid questions." Just supportive, patient guidance. Whether you're 25 or 55, whether you've tried a hundred times before or this is your first attempt, you're welcome here.

✅ Focus on Hair Health

I don't just teach you how to make braids look good. I teach you how to do it in a way that protects hair health, prevents damage, and respects the scalp. Technique without care is useless.

✅ Post-Workshop Support

You don't just learn and then get sent off into the world alone. You get follow-up resources, practice tips, and ongoing support. I'm genuinely invested in your success.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: I'm a complete beginner. Will I be able to keep up?

A: YES! That's exactly who our workshops are designed for. Everyone starts as a beginner, and our teaching is structured specifically for people who've never done this before.

Q: What if I've tried learning before and failed?

A: That's not failure, that's just proof that you needed proper guidance! Most people who "can't learn" from videos do amazing in our workshops because they finally get the correction and support they needed.

Q: Do I need to bring anything?

A: Nope! We provide everything; mannequin heads, combs, clips, all the tools. Just bring yourself and your willingness to learn.

Q: What's the age range of students?

A: We get everyone from early 16s to late 50s! Age doesn't matter, if you want to learn, you can learn.

Q: Can I bring my daughter/friend?

A: Absolutely! We love when people learn together. Just make sure you book separate spots for each person.

Q: How do I know which dates are available?

A: Click on any of the booking links in this guide and you'll see all upcoming dates with availability. We regularly add new dates throughout the year!

Q: What if I can't make the date I booked?

A: Life happens! Just let us know as soon as possible and we'll work with you to reschedule or offer a credit toward a future workshop, as long as its not up to 48 hours before your workshop day.

Q: Is this only for mums?

A: Not at all! While many mums join us to learn to braid their children's hair, we also have students who want to learn for themselves, for friends, or to start a braiding business. Everyone's welcome.

Q: What's the difference between the Taster and the Braid Beginner Workshop?

A: The Taster is 2 hours and gives you a taste of the basics, perfect if you're nervous or unsure. The Braid Beginner Workshop is a full day where we go deep into technique, troubleshooting, and really making sure you master the skill.

Q: What's the difference between Braid Artist and Braid Master Level 1?

A: Braid Artist is for family and community braiding (extensions, box braids, basics). Braid Master Level 1 is professional training, you learn advanced techniques (knotless, boho, feed-in braids) PLUS business skills like pricing, client care, and portfolio building. It's the difference between braiding for fun and braiding as a business.

Q: Do I have to take the courses in order?

A: We recommend it because each course builds on the previous one. However, if you have experience, we can assess your skill level and recommend the right starting point for you.

Q: What if I want to braid professionally but I'm a complete beginner?

A: Start with the Braid Beginner Workshop, progress to Braid Artist, then enrol in Braid Master Level 1. This pathway gives you a solid foundation before diving into professional techniques and business training.
